The Age of the Galactic Bulge
نویسنده
چکیده
The dominant stellar population of the central bulge of the Milky Way is old, with roughly solar metallicity. The age is very similar to that of the old metal rich bulge globular clusters and to 47 Tucanae, which has an age of 13 Gyr. Stellar composition measurements from Keck/HIRES confirm that bulge stars are enhanced in Mg and Ti. New HST/NICMOS data are consistent with an old stellar population dominating the central 100 pc of the Milky Way. New infrared photometry has been reported for the bulge of M 31. Although bright asymptotic giant branch stars are observed in the in-frared, the data are most consistent with an old stellar population.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملObservations of planetary nebulae in the Galactic Bulge
High quality spectrophotometric observations of 30 Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge have been made. Accurate reddenings, plasma parameters, and abundances of He, O, N, S, Ar, Cl are derived. We find the abundances of O, S, Ar in the Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge to be comparable with the abundances of the Planetary Nebulae in the Disk, high abundances being maybe slightly more ...
متن کاملAge and Metallicity Distribution of the Galactic Bulge from Extensive Optical and Near-IR Stellar Photometry
We present a new determination of the metallicity distribution, age, and luminosity function of the Galactic bulge stellar population. By combining near-IR data from the 2MASS survey, from the SOFI imager at ESO NTT and the NICMOS camera on board HST we were able to construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) and luminosity functions (LF) with large statistics and small photometric errors from the...
متن کاملA new , cleaner colour - magnitude diagram for the metal - rich globular cluster NGC 6528 and the velocity dispersion in the Galactic Bulge
Using two epochs of observations with HST/WFPC2 we obtain the stellar proper motions for all stars in the field. The proper motions are used to separate the bulge from the cluster stars. The stellar sequences in the resulting colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) are better defined than in any previously published CMD. Using α-enhanced stellar isochrones we find NGC 6528 to have a probable age of 11± ...
متن کاملThe Galactic bulge: a review
The Milky Way is the only galaxy for which we can resolve individual stars at all evolutionary phases, from the Galactic center to the outskirt. The last decade, thanks to the advent of near IR detectors and 8 meter class telescopes, has seen a great progress in the understanding of the Milky Way central region: the bulge. Here we review the most recent results regarding the bulge structure, ag...
